Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]

Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs)

Hi, my name is Stefan Florin (manager marketing team weryon.ro) and i represent Sebastian Ciobanu[edit]

Hi, my name is Stefan Florin (manager marketing team weryon.ro) and i represent Sebastian Ciobanu, who has his page with Wiki: https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_Ciobanu and who wants to change the picture chosen by the Wikipedia editor for his profile, How we can proceeed?. Thank you in advance. Weryon Digital Marketing (talk) 06:09, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The biography article about Sebastian Ciobanu doesn't have any picture and it does not seem, that there is any image of Sebastian Ciobanu on Commons. if there was a picture of Sebastian Ciobanu available on Commons, sooner or later a Wikpedian may add it to the biography of Sebastian Ciobanu on the different language Wikipedias. If there is a portrait image of Sebastian Ciobanu with a free license available on the internet anyone can import it to commons. If a photographer (or someone who received the full copyright of the fotograph) has an image them can upload the image to commons. If you have one or more fotos of Sebastian Ciobanu, you can upload these image, if you check before, that you own the full copyright (i.e. the fotographer transferred the full rights to you). You need to give the name of the author (the fotographer) and the source (where it has been published before) and as it is not your own work, you will also need to send a permission to VRT (click the link and read, how to do the VRT process). Addional note: Your account name is the name of a company. At english Wikipedia you will get blocked fot that name immedially. You can request a renaming at meta and as you are a representative of a company you should both verify the account and disclose that you are a representative of a company. The rules differ between different Wikipedias. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Manny thanks! Weryon Digital Marketing (talk) 14:48, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Weryon Digital Marketing: I think User:C.Suthorn has made this a little more complicated than it needs to be, by trying to cover all cases (though he is very correct on his advice to change your account name and disclosing that you are a representative of the company; I'd also add, you should read en:WP:COI about conflicts of interest). But as for the photo, here are the three easiest ways to do it:
    1. Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures). If they already have an established web presence of their own, have them place the pictures on their own web site/Flickr page/whatever and indicate overtly that they offer a it under the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license (which means they reserve the right of attribution, but allow derivative works and commercial use, both of which are required by Commons). Then anyone with an account can indicate that page as a source and upload the photo.
    2. Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures). Have them create their own Wikimedia Commons account (if they don't already have one) and upload it themself, using the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license. They should use their user page to state clearly who they are. There is still some possibility they would have to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT if someone doubts that the photo is really theirs, but given that we are having this discussion now I think that would be easily sorted out; you can just refer them to me and I can probably settle it without that process.
    3. Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures); have anyone (including yourself) upload the picture using the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license, and mark the file page as explained at Template:Permission pending. Then have the photographer send permission as described at COM:VRT.
There are a few other ways to do this, but I believe these are the most straightforward. - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading my brand-new author icon to Commons[edit]

About a week ago, a Redditor by the name of "LeoTheFloofyDragon" delivered this portrait of my blue-furred tanuki avatar, which I intend to use not only as the top-left icon for my creative-venture wiki, but also my WP userpage portrait. (This becomes important in the commentary for an FTA post I'm currently preparing on MH, my first since late June.) Before any of you ask, here's a transcript from RDT chat on Saturday afternoon confirming his permission:

Routhwick: "Afternoon, Leo. Care if I give you a reminder before long?"

LeoTheFloofyDragon: "Reminder?"

R: "Yep. Uploading soon (with your kind permission) under my wiki's preferred PD waivers."

L: "Ofc!
"I just ask that you credit me as the maker of that piece somewhere if you don't mind"

R: "As I always do in my descriptions/commentary."

L: "Awesome, tysm :3"

If The Harvett Vault (talk · contribs) could do it (sorry if Commons gave you a hard time on your uploads recently), then so might I. Any further advice? --Slgrandson (talk) 18:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Slgrandson: if the artist wants attribution, I would recommend strongly against a PD waiver. That does not retain the right of attribution. Use {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} instead.
I'm going to assume right now that the artist has not formally transferred copyright to you; if they have, then this gets more complicated. Say so below and I'll give you the more complicated version.
The simplest way to clarify permission would be for the artist to add a comment to that Reddit post indicating the license they are offering (again, presumably {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}}) and how they want to be attributed. uhen anyone (including you) can upload that, citing that page as the source, and using the indicated license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: Any moment soon, I'll remind Leo of COM:VRT (né OTRS) to save face. (Pinging now before this gets stale.) --Slgrandson (talk) 21:13, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: Relayed your advice/my VRT suggestion to Leo via RDT chat. Still awaiting further consultation from another 1-3 Commons clerks before I move ahead. (Happy Labor Day!) --Slgrandson (talk) 00:19, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to Remove Wrong Image from a Page?[edit]

How can I get an image removed from a Wikimedia Commons page? The person in the picture is not the person whose page it is. I requested a deletion a month ago, with detailed reasons, and never received a response.

Page is Lotte Lehmann's page: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=lotte+lehmann&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=image

Image is of LILLI Lehmann, not LOTTE Lehmann: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lilli_Lehmann_as_%27Venus%27_in_Wagner%27s_Tannh%C3%A4user.jpg

This picture has been used in at least two different Wikipedia pages, and incorrectly identified as being Lotte Lehmann. I was able to modify the name in the image description (it was originally listed as Lotte Lehmann as well), but it should be removed from Lotte Lehmann's page.

Thank you. SP-lava (talk) 02:10, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @SP-lava: that's not really a Commons page, it's just a search result. Probably if you put "Lotte Lehmann" in quotes, you'll get a better search result. File:Lilli_Lehmann_as_'Venus'_in_Wagner's_Tannhäuser.jpg (which is a Commons page) appears now to be entirely correct. - Jmabel ! talk 02:22, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks @Jmabel. I did not realize The images I found were a search result, I thought they were on a specific Lotte Lehmann page, that people had added pictures of her to. Clearly I do not yet understand Wikimedia Commons - I thought it was like a Wikipedia page, a dedicated page that aggregates information on one specific person, concept, or thing. I did what you suggested, and tried a different search with quotes around the first and last name, but LILLI Lehmann's picture still showed up. Is there any identifying information I can edit on the page for https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lilli_Lehmann_as_%27Venus%27_in_Wagner%27s_Tannh%C3%A4user.jpg to further refine the description, so it doesn't show up on a Lotte Lehmann search? The goal here is to stop people from inadvertently choosing that image when they are wanting to illustrate something about Lotte Lehmann. (In fact, she never sang the opera role shown in the image.) Thank you.~~ SP-lava (talk) 22:16, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel -- I did some digging and found that when I first reported this, back in July, the request for deletion was denied, but the file was renamed using a redirect to reflect it was Lilli Lehmann. Could the redirect be the reason it still shows up in a search? If you can think of a solution, please let me know. Thanks. ~~ SP-lava (talk) 22:28, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • It's some sort of problem with the search. Maybe it's using an old cache? Maybe the redirect? We usually hesitate to delete redirect for a file that had a given wrong name for any significant period of time because there is a fair chance someone is still using the redirect. As far as I can tell, Category:Lotte Lehmann appears to be fine. - Jmabel ! talk 22:31, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@SP-lava: Yes, it is because of the redirect. If the search is performed with Special:Search, it shows in bold the words that the search finds, and for this file it indicates that it is the words in the redirect. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:14, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DONATION of BOOKS[edit]

I am a retired Professor here in the USA, of Haitian origin. I have a collection of the French Classics and contemporary novels that were used in my French Literature courses through my years at the University. My husband and I are moving and "downsizing" and I dream of passing them on for use ... to benefit young and old in my country of birth Any suggestion on how to donate / and ship cartons of books ... to the Library maybe? would be appreciated 2603:9000:7804:F00:A493:86DC:B728:D6B6 21:37, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is a page specifically for help in using Wikimedia Commons, so we can't really help you here. How can I check if an old map is in the public domain?[edit]

I want to upload a cropped section of J.M. Brewer's 1934 map of Philadelphia which I found on the Free Library of Philadelphia's website. I can't find any copyright information on it, where can I look?

https://libwww.freelibrary.org/digital/item/16715 Unbandito (talk) 22:35, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Unbandito: At the lower right that indicates that it was copyrighted when first created (1934). Under copyright law at that time, they'd have had to renew copyright in 1962. If they did that, then it is copyrighted through 2029; if not, it is now {{PD-US-not renewed}}. You'd need to look through the 1962 copyright renewals and see if the copyrights for this were renewed or not. I'm honestly not sure whether the 1962 renewal records can be found online; someone at Commons:Village pump/Copyright would know. - Jmabel ! talk 22:51, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That's mercifully few renewals for maps, easily searched! Pinging @Unbandito, it looks like you are in the clear. {{PD-US-not renewed}}. - Jmabel ! talk 02:18, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Probably need to look in 8 volumes (2 volumes per year): 1957 and 1958 for C. R. Rosenberger (1930 base map) and 1961 and 1962 for J. M. Brewer (1934 analytical). -- Asclepias (talk) 11:49, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've now checked the Rosenberger ones as well, not renewed. Looks like outside of Sanborn and Rand McNally, very few people or organizations renewed copyrights on maps in that era. - Jmabel ! talk 17:00, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading scans of personal photographs.[edit]

I just wanted to upload a few personal photographs of my Great Aunt for her wikipage. A studio portrait and a few publicity images of her at work. All taken around 1940. I personally scanned the images from her personal photo collection that we inherited when she passed. Im a little confused on proper copyright tags required. Photographs do not show photographer or publishing notes. This would be in the US. DB-82604 (talk) 03:35, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DB-82604: The copyright is owned by the original photographer or their heirs and ownership of a photo does not confer any copyrights to the person owning a photograph. Without the copyright holder information we cannot use them. Is there any information on the back of the photos that might help in that regard? Copyright question and rotate question[edit]

Hello,

I wanted to upload a picture (made by me) of a town hall in Raszków, Poland. The town hall in question was renovated in 2018, but it was first built in 19th century. My question is: Can I upload a picture like that?

Also, when i tried to upload the picture using the Upload Wizard, it was rotated the wrong way. How can I fix it? Walfip (talk) 10:15, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Walfip: I cannot see that you have uploaded any images that have not been deleted. Which image are you talking about? You can add a rotate request to the file page by following the details found here: Template:Rotate. Ww2censor (talk) 10:55, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perhaps I used some wrong words. What I meant was that during the Upload stage of the Upload Wizard the picture was rotated the wrong way (the supposed bottom of the picture was on the left), so I did not try to upload it because it would be wrongly rotated. The picture was never uploaded nor deleted, so you could not see it. Walfip (talk) 12:15, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for answering the rotate question. However, one question remains: Can I upload a picture like this? Walfip (talk) 12:22, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Walfip: You may try. I have seen that happen in the Upload Wizard, with mixed results (wrong rotations were fixable after upload).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:24, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Walfip: According to COM:FOP Poland, Poland has a generous freedom of panorama for anything publicly exhibited. So even if the building is in copyright (and I suspect it isn't), it's fine to upload pictures of it to Commons. You can add the {{FoP-Poland}} tag to the file description to indicate this if you want. --bjh21 (talk) 12:30, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Markers misplaced in PNG preview of SVG image[edit]

Hello. Arrow markers are displaced in PNG preview of SVG image File:Wiatrownica klapowo-zasuwowa - schemat.svg. Can you pelase fix? Regards TazGPL (talk) 05:52, 27 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons uses an old version of librsvg for this PNG rendering and it has a lot of bugs. Until it gets updated, unfortunately the only way to fix problems is to work around the bugs. As far as I can see, the issue is that the arrowheads are directed by the auto-start-reverse function, which is not supported by librsvg. I am not aware of another way to get the same result using a different function, maybe someone else does? I'd say the easiest solution would be to just draw the arrowheads using simple lines in a triangle shape. That will be rendered fine. Madfly2 (talk) 21:52, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to upload text data (JSON) with images?[edit]

Hi!

I'm preparing to upload a bunch of images from the Nasjonalmuseet for kunst, arkitektur og design. I wrote a script to hit the Digitalt Museum's API and pull down a bunch of data, like when the work was created, the author, etc. I then parse this data and generate the Wikitext and templates I need for the image. (Example page with some bugs to still work out.)

I'd like to include the raw data from the API (which is sort of an ugly JSON blog) because I have to make some lossy choices with my parsing and I want to make sure future editors have something to fall back on to fix it if I made a wrong choice with how I'm using the data.

I've considered Template:Created with code but am not sure this is the best way to preserve the data. Any suggestions? Thanks! -- Falcorian (talk) 04:05, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • For one possibility, you could just add it commented out. - Jmabel ! talk 04:35, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You could include the raw text data in the description page and then instantly create a new revision of the description page with the data removed and document the presence and removal in th edit comment. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 08:37, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Those are both good ideas! I like the "comment out" option at first glance because then I don't have to have my bot do two edits, which should be slightly easier. -- Falcorian (talk) 01:02, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikidata infobox[edit]

I have added a category about a building that has an entry in Wikidata. I copied the name of the Wikidata item to be the name of the category, but when I add the {Wikidata infobox} tag I get the message "NO WIKIDATA ID FOUND!" How do I link this category to the Wikidata item? The category is "Channelkirk Church"

TIA -- PeterK147 (talk) 14:44, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Convenience link: Category:Channelkirk Church. - Jmabel ! talk 14:52, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
this (on Wikidata) fixes it. Wikidata, not Commons, controls what Commons categories are connected to what Wikidata items. - Jmabel ! talk 14:55, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @PeterK147: the above solution allows you to use {{Wikidata Infobox}} in its simplest form. If you are not confident in editing Wikidata (yet) you can include the "qid" parameter into the template at the Commons end. In this case it would have looked like: {{ Wikidata Infoboxqid = Q17567874 }} to get the same result. FotoFree (talk) 15:41, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But, unless I'm mistaken, using an explicit QID on Commons does not provide the Interwiki links, which must be done on Wikidata. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Jmabel: , yes, I think you are right there. Proper sitelinks, between the WikiData item and Commons Category, have to be set up at the WD end using your example edit above. Perhaps the template "qid" parameter is intended for another purpose, but the question sparked a memory braincell in me that I was once in the same position. At that time WikiData looked 'scary' so I used that (seemingly simpler) alternative. Now I realise WD is actually quite cool, so would heavily recommend doing it the proper way and set up sitelinks explicitly at WD, by taking a bit more time to learn about it. Open to other's input as I am not very technically up on this - e.g. would a bot on WD add a sitelink from the template call from Commons? Probably not possible. Sorry to promote something if it causes problems... FotoFree (talk) 07:56, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The purpose is that you might have more than one category that needs to refer to the same QID: when Commons splits something that Wikidata lumps. - Jmabel ! talk 14:57, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can the pictures taken from a Museum's website be uploaded giving full credit to the artist and the current Museum where it is housed? Untitledjuan (talk) 01:33, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Untitledjuan: typically, no. Nothing special about a museum in this respect. Most (probably 98%) of what you will find online is copyrighted and not free-licensed, and therefore ineligible for Commons.
  • Exception: non-creative photos of older, two-dimensional works (U.S. works published before 1928; most non-U.S. work where the artist died before 1953, though some will run afoul of that U.S. rule, it's complicated) are often in the public domain and can be uploaded on that basis.
  • The above is an effort to give quick rules of thumb on something that is actually very complicated; if you don't know your way around copyright law, I'd suggest avoiding museum images of 20th- and 21st-century works, and also avoid anything that includes showing a frame, because the frame will be three-dimensional. - Jmabel ! talk 02:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Old postcard with photo of a building, photo taken ~ 1939, postcard sent 1940.[edit]

Old postcard with photo of a building, photo taken ~ 1939, postcard sent 1940. To my opinion all copyrights are expired. How can I make use of this photo to upload it to Commons without getting objections from watchdogs? Lupo.aneth (talk) 18:38, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload the coats of arms of municipalities[edit]

Can upload the coats of arms of municipalities of Venezuela to the Wikimedia Commons?? AbchyZa22 (talk) 22:07, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@AbchyZa22: There's no general answer to that. Anyone can render an image from a blazon. Any given rendering would have its own copyright. If the blazon is new enough and unique enough to retain a copyright of its own, you might have an issue with that rendering being considered a derivative work, but otherwise any given rendering of a blazon is just like any other drawing: if it's above the threshold of originality, it is copyrighted at creation by the person who drew it; eventually (though typically after many decades) it will fall into the public domain. So unless you are rendering the blazon yourself, the usual issues will arise that would arise for copyright status of any other drawing. - Jmabel ! talk 00:37, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Photos of my grandmother, actress & singer Marie Burke[edit]

Wikipedia have a page on my grandmother, actress & singer Marie Burke. I would like to upload some of the photos of her from our family albums, but I did not take them. Quite a few were 'publicity' photos, or scans of old programmes, e.g. 'The Great Waltz' at the Center Theatre on Broadway in 1934. Can I upload them? I am especially keen as the photo on the Wikipedia page is not actually of Grannie Marie, & I'd like to put the record straight. Carolwellwood (talk) 22:58, 29 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • U.S. programs and publicity photos from that era typically will fall under {{PD-US-not renewed}}. You'd have to go through the usual checking to make sure copyright was not renewed. Someone at Commons:Village pump/Copyright should be able to help with that.
  • As for family photos, if you are the heir to the intellectual property of the photographer, you can use something like {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. If not, you'd need the person who does own those rights either to upload and license them, or to go through the COM:VRT process.
  • Yeah, I know it's complicated. Sorting out copyright on things that are old but not super-old can be really tricky. - Jmabel ! talk 00:43, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Keeping original resolution of maps[edit]

Hello. I am facing issues with keeping original resolution of maps I take a screenshot of. For example, I uploaded File:Map of Europe and neighbors.svg from Political Map of Europe. I used it in Wikipedia but it was removed due to legibility issues. I noticed that the original map doesn't have legibility issues as my uploaded copy. Investigating the issue further indicates that the screenshot mechanism of the operating system might be the culprit. My question then is, is there a tool you suggest I use to copy maps to upload them here to keep the original resolution? Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 18:21, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Thinker78: Hi, and welcome. In the case of deviantart, please log in to deviantart and then use the built-in download button. Doing that with this file produced a 39,736 KB file named "political_map_of_europe_by_shadrol_d7hf7lg.png", roughly 18x the size of your upload (before cropping).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:37, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. I will do that. Is there another option you suggest when there is no download button? Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 18:40, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Thinker78: In the current Chrome for Windows, unless the site disallows, I can right-click on the image and then click "Open image in new tab" to see what they are hiding, click "Save image as..." to save it, click "Copy image" to copy it for pasting into an image editor like the GIMP, or click "Copy image address" to help with precise attribution. Your browser may vary.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:48, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the tip. I tried it out and found out that saving image also reduces resolution unless I use a specific format that keeps the resolution, like PNG. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 01:42, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

need a slight tweak to an image[edit]

the slany shanty

See image at right. I took this in a hurry, because it was a real rarity for there to be only one vehicle out front in the middle of the day (it has since been badly damaged by fire) So, I see now that in my haste I did not really level my phone very well and the building appears to be slanted, which it was not. I'm not really too adept at photo manipulation so if someone who is could just adjust this slightly that would be great. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:09, 30 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

More permissive license[edit]

Hello, I have over the last couple weeks uploaded several of my own works to Commons (e.g. File:Aleppo pepper jarred.jpg). I originally uploaded them under CC-BY-SA 4.0 without thinking about it, but I would actually like them under a CC0 license. How can I change this? I know there's no way to go the other way, but it seems like I should be able to make the license more permissive. TheTechnician27 (talk) 02:30, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Update: I think I did it right. TheTechnician27 (talk) 02:39, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@TheTechnician27: That's probably OK, but usually when adding a more permissive license, you don't remove the old one. Instead, you offer a choice of licenses. - Jmabel ! talk 03:03, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That makes sense. In this case, since the new license is CC0, it seems reasonable to just let it be the sole license since it grants permission to do anything with it. TheTechnician27 (talk) 03:06, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not only is it reasonable, but it's the only possibility. Those two statuses are incompatible. One could not claim the copyright and license a work that has been dedicated to the public domain. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:06, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Asclepias: not legally clear whether you can really abrogate copyright (in some countries it is legally clear that you can't). CC-0 falls in such cases falls back to "but you can treat it as if I did." Some people might actually prefer the CC-BY-SA, especially if they want attribution for their derivative work they may want to make sure the original is attributed as well. (They could deal with that by a more elaborate attribution, I suppose.) Anyway, it's not quite as simple as "dedicated to the public domain," though that is certainly the intention. - Jmabel ! talk 18:13, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Qniemiec: Edit the file page to add the license, just like you are editing here. Since you don't say what license, I can't really say something more specific about what you should add. - Jmabel ! talk 22:35, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But it looks like you've already done that, offering a plethora of licenses. - Jmabel ! talk 22:37, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, if I've understood it correctly, in case of forgetting the license, it can be fixed by editing the file's description and appending the respective licence tag, e.g. {{PD-self}} or {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}}. But I was too panicked by this deletion warning in the middle of the night to calm down and read what was recommended there later on as an aid. New Page, New User[edit]

I am a fan of a band. I saw that they have no Wiki Page. So, I contacted them and said I want to make a wiki page for them. They are cool with it. They sent me some band photos, but when I try to upload them, the wiki rejects for copyright questions I think. Can you help me to get the pictures up? I might need to be verified? How do I do that? I saw a page but did not understand. Mistermiek (talk) 05:01, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mistermiek: There are a few things going on here. Please be aware that Wikipedia -- actually, each Wikipedia in a different language -- and Commons are separate projects (although under the umbrella of one foundation) and each makes its own rules. I'm guessing that by "a wiki page" you mean something on the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki). You might want to look at their policy on conflicts of interest to make sure you don't get in any trouble on that account, and also at the "notability" policies related to music to make sure that the band in question are up to en-wiki's required level of notability, so that you don't waste effort on an article that will just get deleted.
Back to here on Commons. When you say "the wiki rejects" it's hard to know what tool you were using, but I'm guessing that it was a cross-wiki upload from en-wiki. And, if so, I'm glad that brought you here, because there are some copyright issues you are going to need to sort out. Please bear with me, because you'd probably rather go through the right hoops and have your content kept than take shortcuts and have it sit here for only a few days before being deleted.
  • Commons is super-strict about copyright and licensing, and pretty much any photos of a present-day band are copyrighted, because every significant country in the world now considers copyright to exist from the moment the photo is taken. (The U.S. was one of the last on board with this, at then beginning of March 1989.) It is possible for a copyright to be transferred, but usually that involves an explicit contract to do so, so most likely the band do not own the copyrights of existing photos of the band, and therefore cannot give a license to use them.
  • For copyrighted photos, Commons requires a license that allows (1) reuse by anyone, including commercial reuse and (2) the creation of derivative works (e.g. cropped versions, re-colorized versions, etc.) It is OK to require a photo credit (e.g. "Photo by FOO"). We normally recommend the {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} license. This license has to be granted by the copyright-holder typically the photographer. The band will probably be able to put you in touch with the photographers in question. If you look at COM:VRT you'll see an explanation of how they -- not anyone else -- can send an email to grant that license. Do make sure you read that carefully, and don't go off half-cocked. Also, be aware that such licenses are irrevocable.
    • If the photographer has a web presence that is clearly their own (e.g. a web site for their photography business) this can be slightly short-circuited by them posting the photo to their own web site and indicating the license there. Then you can cite the relevant URL as a source, and can upload on that basis. Saves a bunch of emailing.
  • It may be simpler if possible for you to take pictures of the band yourself, and upload those as your own work with the same required licensing.
  • As for the technical issue of uploading: if you use Special:UploadWizard here on Commons, you'll probably get around whatever was the issue with the cross-wiki upload. But please make sure you have the licensing issue in hand first.
I hope that's helpful. And I'm sorry this is so complicated, but making someone else's photo broadly available for reuse is not a trivial thing. Please feel free to follow up here if you have further questions.

I enjoy making maps and rarely upload them on to Wikipedia in .png format. I am translating various articles from English Wiki to Gujarati Wiki. While translating the article PSLV-C2, I was referring to a brochure of PSLV-C2 made publicly available by ISRO on their cite. @Dineshjk: the answer is almost certainly "no." Is there any reason to think that the picture in question is either free-licensed or in the public domain? You certainly haven't stated any reason to think so. - Jmabel ! talk 20:58, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel Thanks for your guidance. This is the first instance that I like to upload an image. Wikimedia has an image from another brochure of the ISRO. You may find it at File:LVM3 M3, OneWeb India-2 campaign Brochure 03.png So, I thought that with proper credits, it might be uploaded. But I was not at all clear about that. Thanks once again. Dinesh (talk) 21:37, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dineshjk: well, maybe it will be OK. You didn't provide any links, and I didn't recognize the acromyms "PSLV-C2" or "ISRO". It looks like {{GODL-India}} may cover this. The particular example you now link is something yet to be reviewed, and I personally have never dealt with Indian Government content, so I can't personally give you any strong assurances, but it is likely that the license there is valid and that you could use that file as a model of how to do this.
Could anyone with more experience with Indian government documents please weigh in? - Jmabel ! talk 21:55, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel Thanks for your reply. I want to upload an image from this pdf file. As one can see the file is hosted on Indian Space Research Organization website for the purpose of public education. But there is no information on the license on the site. Dinesh (talk) 10:32, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dineshjk: I do note that https://www.isro.gov.in/ has a copyright symbol and says "All rights reserved", which would suggest that the material there is not in the public domain. But, again, I'm no expert here. You might take this question (with the relevant links this time) to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where maybe you will find an expert on Indian copyright law. I have been researching the Boy's Own Paper and want to update (and make corrections to) the article which already exists, for instance the number of issues. Most of my research has been done with reference to original printed copies. Is it acceptable to cite the B.O.P. itself as the source, or do I have to get the information published elsewhere in order to cite it here? To cite each item of information individually would be impractical. I have searched the help sections of this website but cannot find anything that helps with this particular problem.Duckspindle (talk) 19:37, 1 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Any image here can be used without permission. There are some other requirements for most files, like attribution, but none require consent to use. Have at them. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:08, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think a preferable rephrasing of this would be that due to the license types used on Commons, permission is already granted to use content, including images. Permission is indeed necessary to use copyrighted content, but the uploaders have properly licensed that content and thus given express permission to everyone in the world, subject to conditions, such as attribution, of course. And it is true that Public Domain files such as File:FvfMangaldan,Pangasinan9587 31.JPG are free to use without permission, because literally there is no copyright holder even to grant permission in the first place. I uploaded 2 currently deleted files that I thought would be most suitable and recent enough File:Enya's Christmas Day message, 2019.png and last year File:Enya 2022.jpg and there have been other uploads since, but those may have also been deleted.

Contrary to popular belief, Enya is not a recluse; she has been photographed publicly multiple times since the release and promotional tour of her 2015 studio album. Leaving the page without a clear image may be misleading (e.g. new readers may think that Enya is a band or music project) and adding a recent, front-facing image would be most helpful. It is likely that this year or the next Enya will release a new album, perhaps that may resolve this issue, but for the time being, it would be valuable to have a clear, recent image.

Would it be possible to recover one of the deleted images, and be able to attribute these accordingly as cropped from the original sources? Topazrochelle9 (talk) 22:08, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Both of those images were deleted because they were copyright violations. Commons is for free licensed media only. If you can locate legitimately free licensed of Enya or other notables, such would be welcome here; non-free images are not allowed. File:Παναγία της Άσσιας.jpg.[edit]

Hi,

This file File:Παναγία της Άσσιας.jpg has been deleted as a Copyright violation: http://www.polignosi.com/cgibin/hweb?-A=37532&-V=limmata. I have polignosi.com consent to upload with attribution, but i am not sure how to do it. Do you mind pointing me to the right direction please? Should polignosi.com sent an email to a wikimedia email what are the necessary steps to get around this issue?

Thank you very much 23x2 (talk) 03:44, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@23x2: "Consent" has to come in the form of granting a specific license that is compatible with COM:L. {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}}, which you indicated, would be fine if it comes from the copyright holder.
The simplest way for them to grant the relevant permission would be for them to indicate the license at http://www.polignosi.com/cgibin/hweb?-A=37532&-V=limmata. Currently that page says "All rights reserved." We could then restore the image, cite that as the source, a nd attribute the image correctly.
If for some reason they don't want to do that, it is more complicated, but COM:VRT explains how the owner of rights to a photo can communicate that to the Volunteer Response Team who handle confidential email correspondence. This process works, but it usually involves exchange of a few emails (which have to come from the copyright-holder, not from you) and there is a bit of backlog, so if they can just edit the page on their site to indicate the license and the desired credit, that is a lot quicker and easier. - Jmabel ! talk 05:36, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If there is a question here about help using Commons, I completely fail to understand it. - Jmabel ! talk 17:25, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dorothea Lange - White Angel Breadline[edit]

I am assuming this image is somewhere on the Commons. I cannot find it, but hesitate to upload this public domain iconic image. Can anyone point me to the image on the commons? Thanks! WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:46, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wait, wait...looking at the dates again, I think it pre-dates her employment with the WPA, so it would not be PD. Sorry. Nevermind. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:25, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Logo of Bootle FC[edit]

Hi! I’m trying to update the logo of Bootle FC but I of course didn’t make the logo and I don’t know if I’m allowed to put it in. Idontknowlol7 (talk) 18:06, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If it is protected by copyright, no you cannot. Ruslik (talk) 19:18, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And unless it is extremely simple, it is almost certainly protected by copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 22:02, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

May I upload a picture that I took of my husband in non-public place?[edit]

May I upload a picture that I took of my husband in non-public place? There is a biography of him in Wikipedia and I have his permission to use the photo. How does he convey his permission?
