ScheduleD work Hours

Scheduled Work Hours

The typical work day at Davidson is 8:30 AM - 5 PM with either a 30 minute or 1 hour lunch break (please confirm with your team leader as this is according to your FTE; most positions in the library are allocated as 40 hours a week) and two 10 minute breaks (or one 20 minute break). Please see HR guidelines for more specifics.

Please note: At Davidson a full-time work week is 40 hours for hourly paid employees and AT LEAST 40 hours for exempt (salaried) staff.

Please keep in mind that, according to HR guidelines, "rest breaks and lunch breaks are not cumulative (cannot be carried forward to other days) and cannot be used to shorten the workday."

Some library staff positions may have alternate hours, as flexibility is needed to support the ebbs and flows of the academic year. Please work closely with your team leader and communicate schedule changes with your team members.

College-wide expectations dictate that Outlook calendars are kept up to date so that meetings can be scheduled efficiently. It is very helpful when scheduling to reflect your scheduled work hours in Outlook's calendar settings.

Please note: Blocking off large blocks of recurring time can make it very difficult for your colleagues to schedule necessary committee meetings. Please keep this in mind during special project work, stay flexible, and communicate with your teammates accordingly.

SUMMER FLEX

Regardless if you are exempt (salaried) or non-exempt (hourly)—if you are full-time, to take advantage of half-day Fridays-- you need to find a way to add an hour to your day Mon-Thursday to reach your minimum of 40 hours by the end of the week. What could that look like? One idea is to come in a ½ hour early and add a ½ hour to the end of your day (or take a shortened lunch of ½ hour). Our typical work hour expectation is 8:30 AM to 5 PM in the school year…so for summer, that could look like coming in at 8 AM or earlier. Please make sure you are talking to your team leads about your plan for summer-flex!

If you would like to take a vacation day on a Friday during summer flex:  As long as you have reached 36 hours by Thursday—you CAN add a ½ day of vacation time for the morning and take the flex-afternoon. With that said: we want to make sure we are equitable around Fridays on the teams. The expectation continues that at least one person from a team needs to be in-house during the summer if at all possible (understanding that vacations may sometimes overlap)—making sure that services are communicated and backups are in place.
