The Sorrows of Young Werther 

Author: J.W. von Goether (1749-1832) was considered the greatest German literary figure of the modern era with an international standing equal to Germany's supreme philosophers. He is well known for his numerous positions as a poet, playwright, novelist, statesman, scientist, theatre director, critic, and as an amateur artist. 

Plot:
The story is about a sensitive, young artistic man who demonstrates the fatal effects of fondness and partiality in regards to love, art, and society. As he is unable to coexist his poetic fantasies with the everyday world and it's demands, Werther goes out to the country to try and restore his well-being. There, he falls in love with a women named Charlotte, the fiancĂ© of a friend. Eventually, he leaves and later returns, finding that he feels depressed and hopeless no matter where he lives, and as result commits suicide. 

Application: 
The creature states his reaction to the story of Werther, that learns from his "despondency and gloom" however does not precisely understand it, or place himself in the same situation, which is incredibly interesting since most readers consider the creature to be severely unhappy just as Werther is. This demonstrates complex thinking by the creature, and is important to take note of.
