First issue of Scripts ‘N Pranks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

After The Yowl<\/em><\/a> was retired, most of the editorial staff remained to produce Scripts ‘N Pranks<\/em>, a magazine devoted to “literature (scripts) and humor (pranks).”\u00a0 The first issue was produced in November of 1936. It was a quarterly magazine until the fall of 1958, when it began publishing three times a year.\u00a0 In the early 1940s there was a break in publication due to World War II.<\/p>\n

Early on, the editors published humor balanced with poetry, literature, and other fillers, but later Scripts ‘N Pranks<\/em> reverted its focus back to humor and satire by separately publishing the issues: only one issue was of literary nature while the others focused on humor.<\/p>\n

The character of Scripts ‘N Pranks<\/em> can be seen in a poem dedicating the first issue of the magazine:<\/p>\n

We call it
\nSCRIPTS ‘ N PRANKS
\nTo those brave souls who
\nSuggested names, we offer thanks–
\nBut not congratulations<\/p>\n

To the editor of the yearbook
\nWe offer apologies<\/p>\n

To the Davidsonian reporters
\nWho can’t spell it
\nWe offer aid<\/p>\n

To the post office officials
\nWho curse us daily
\nWe beg forgiveness<\/p>\n

To the students
\nWhose tongues it twists
\nWe offer sympathy<\/p>\n

To those who cant tell
\nthe difference anyway
\nWe offer counsel
\nTo the rest of you
\nWe offer — SCRIPTS ‘N PRANKS<\/p>\n

The last issue was published in February of 1965 because the editors felt that Scripts ‘N Pranks<\/em> no longer represented Davidson College.\u00a0 The Miscellany<\/em>, a more serious literary magazine, was begun after the Scripts N Pranks<\/em> ended.<\/p>\n
