Unity Church Road used to cross over the Catawba River and link up with Bethel Church Road in Cornelius. When the time came for the bridge crossing over the river to be removed, the Army Corp of Engineers tried to demolish it with explosives and drop into the river to be broken up. Apparently, the attempted demolition did not go well; the bridge landed on its side in the river and remains there today.
