What is a lake and what does it provide for us?
Standards: KG.1.3 Identify Physical features (rivers, lake, hill, mountain, roads)
KG 2.2 Explain ways people use environmental resources to meet basic needs and wants.
Objectives: Identify the body of water on a map. Describe how we use the lake within our community. Describe what we can do to preserve the lake and the surrounding environment.
Essential Questions: What is a lake? How is it different from other bodies of water? How do we use Lake Norman?
Teacher presentation/discussion: Show the lake on a map and point out the water and the roads on the map. Show pictures of people using the lake. How is a lake different from a beach? Make a class list of ways we use the lake. Show the dam and how water helps us make electricity. Discuss the different animals that make their homes on/around the lake. What are our responsibilities as students to take care of the lake?
Student Activity: Record a video clip that explains what Lake Norman is and how we use the lake to meet our needs (electricity, entertainment, and homes for animals) and what we can do to preserve the lake. Draw a picture of how you and your family use the lake, how the lake helps us, or how you can take care of the lake. Write a sentence about how people or animals use the lake.
