Construction of the Lake Campus
Land, now under Lake Norman, near the future shoreline of the Lake Campus
As construction on Lake Norman began in 1959, Davidson College President David Grier Martin contacted Duke Power President Norman Cocke to request that the College be allocated some water front land on the new lake. Duke Power ultimately contributed 109.6 acres of water front property, which became the Davidson College Lake Campus. The Lake Campus provides Davidson students with the unique opportunity to be involved in a variety of water activities as well as a home for club sailing and crew teams. It also provides for numerous other recreational activities that benefit the school as a whole, such as Odyssey campouts, freshman orientation social, and college departmental cookouts.
