According to the US Census Bureau, the four counties surrounding Lake Norman have experienced rapid population growth in the last forty years. Mecklenburg county experienced the most striking increase in population, probably due to the expanding City of Charlotte. Additionally, when looking at population trends in relation to Lake Norman it is important to examine the historic population trends of the surrounding towns. Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville and Morrisville have all seen tremendous populations increases in the last 20 years. What were once small towns have boomed into suburban centers and destinations for Lake Norman residents and visitors. The population increases in the surrounding towns as well as the ever-expanding Charlotte population place numerous pressures on the Lakes natural habitats and water quality.
