Dewey…and Donuts https://lisa-forrest.com/library-of-the-future/dewey-and-donuts/ https://lisa-forrest.com/library-of-the-future/dewey-and-donuts/#respond Tue, 25 Apr 2023 19:09:37 +0000 https://lisa-forrest.com/?p=574 Davidson College Faculty: Please join us May 10 – 12 for Dewey & Donuts Open Hours (between the hours of 9 AM to 4 PM each day). Stop by anytime during those hours to peruse the stacks, enjoy a donut and coffee, and help us review a portion of the Dewey Reference collection for items that are important for your teaching and/or research.

Please note: If you would prefer to peruse the Dewey Reference before the scheduled open hours, reach out to us. Directions and review slips are located near the Dewey Reference stacks on the first floor of the library.

As you might recall from the Library of the Future Task Force report, one of the short-term recommendations for the library was to address the library’s 15-year history of using two classification systems. Importantly, the Dewey Reference collection has already been reviewed by faculty several years ago, and what remains was deemed in need of further evaluation. Over the past several months, librarians and archivists have been working on identifying books from this collection to be reclassified and moved to Archives and Special Collections or to our Library of Congress classified stacks; but a significant number of Dewey reference books remain for faculty review.

Your participation in this process will guide us in our next step, which is to review the 180K Dewey volumes on the library’s second floor. A comprehensive review of these books will be a large endeavor, but a necessary one as we continue to prepare for our library of the future (it’s on the horizon)!

Prior to Davidson, James served as Director of Collections and Partnerships at the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), a nonprofit consortium of academic libraries dedicated to building shared collections for research and teaching. In his role at CRL he led content strategies and collaborative programs that provide access to unique and distinctive resources. An ardent champion of cooperative collection development, James pioneered major strategic collection partnerships to provide open and equitable access to research material in print and electronic formats. James has presented internationally on the power of collaboration in affecting transformative change in libraries and has served as principal investigator for numerous international grant-funded initiatives. He is presently pursuing his master’s degree in Library and Information Science at Dominican University (Illinois) and has a bachelor’s degree in International Politics from Georgetown University.

James will play a critical role in helping to define and implement strategies to support Davidson’s library of the future, including the review and development of policies, procedures, and workflows for the lifecycle management of collections and the systems that provide access to them. A truly kind, capable, and collaborative leader, he will guide the collections team in providing excellent services in the areas of collection development, discovery, e-resource licensing, acquisitions, and the organization of library materials. We’re thrilled by the unique experiences that James brings to Davidson, particularly around collaborative collection building and his focus on open and equitable access to information. Library of the the future…here we come!

Please stop by the library and say hello: Most days, you’ll find James in the back office area near InterLibrary Loan or perusing the stacks. Welcome to Davidson, James!

Davidson College Joins the Center for Research Libraries https://lisa-forrest.com/library-collections/davidson-college-joins-the-center-for-research-libraries/ https://lisa-forrest.com/library-collections/davidson-college-joins-the-center-for-research-libraries/#respond Thu, 09 Dec 2021 15:17:53 +0000 https://lisa-forrest.com/?p=346 We are excited to share that Davidson College is now a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), an international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries. This CRL consortium provides access to diverse collections that are shaped by specialists at major U.S. and Canadian research universities. Through the incredible efforts of CRL, collections are identified, preserved, and made accessible to researchers across the world.

CRL’s resources include:

– The largest circulating collection of newspapers in North America–more than 16,000 newspaper titles from all world regions and from every U.S. state—mainstream dailies and opposition papers, rare publications from international conflict zones, U.S. ethnic titles and early African-American newspapers
– Access to rich holdings in STE print serials through a partnership with the Linda Hall Library of Science, Technology and Engineering
– More than 800,000 non-U.S. dissertations
– Area Studies: major collections of news, government documents, and archives from Africa, Latin America, Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Southeast and South Asia

CRL functions as a “branch library” for members and includes quick turnaround of loan requests and project-length loan privileges from CRL’s five million items. For more information on CRL collections, please see CRL’s online catalog http://catalog.crl.edu/. Questions about getting started? Please email us at library@davidson.edu.

Davidson College Joins Ithaka S&R Streaming Study https://lisa-forrest.com/library-collections/college-joins-ithaka-sr-streaming-study/ https://lisa-forrest.com/library-collections/college-joins-ithaka-sr-streaming-study/#respond Wed, 29 Sep 2021 20:54:16 +0000 https://lisa-forrest.com/?p=254 This fall, the Davidson College Library will join library peers across the nation to examine the complexities of how instructors access and use video content provided by libraries. Partnering with the non-profit research group Ithaka S&R, the Davidson College team will work cross-institutionally to understand pedagogical practices and teaching needs related to video content. In collaboration with the larger research cohort, the project team will examine cross-institutional licensing terms and work to develop new strategies for licensing and managing streaming use. In addition to using this information to guide negotiation strategies, the team anticipates that the project will help libraries make more informed decisions related to video streaming and better support faculty’s teaching and learning goals. We’re excited to be joining such a great group of colleagues working together to make positive change! Read more about the initiative and list of participating institutions here.
